"Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." Psalm 23:6 (NIV)
As tough decisions make an appearance, we may not feel the goodness and love this verse mentions. Stress and doubt may be the most common elements in our lives, and we may begin to worry about where God's goodness and love disappeared to.
Surely there were times in his life when psalmist David didn't feel the love. When Saul wanted to kill him, David had to flee and live in caves. Though Jonathan had David's back in Saul's court, these friends didn't get to spend time together, and Jonathan's efforts to gain David favor with his father weren't very successful.
Running from Saul didn't give David great parenting skills, and fighting battles didn't win him the role of temple builder--David had his failings in life. But the king still proved the truth of God's promise. Goodness and love *though not personal perfection) followed him lifelong. He left his kingdom, one of the greatest in Israel's history, to his son Solomon, beginning fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the Messiah's kingly lineage.
Goodness and love do not only follow a long-dead king. God offers them to all who make the Lord their Shepherd and walk in His paths. Today may be filled with stress and doubt, but it is not the end of the Christian's journey. We end in God's house, forever.
