Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he trusted to his care everything he owned.
Genesis 39:4 NIV
Joseph must have been an amazing decision maker. His story shows so many places where, instead of responding with anger or despair, he made powerful life choices.
Sold into slavery, this Israelite could have allowed fear of the future of frustration to take over his life. Instead, he decided to put his heart into working for another man, a pagan with a flirtatious wife.
Many less-than-perfect elements filled Joseph's life, but God had given him to honest Potiphar, who trusted the blessings Joseph brought into his life and who seemed to have understood Joseph's character, as well as his wife's. Having put his trust in the Israelite, he did not withdraw it easily---instead of taking Joseph's life, he spared the slave his wire wrongfully accused.
Had Joseph shared his past with his master? Scripture doesn't tell us. But Potiphar saw the wise choices made by his slave and understood that attacking his wife did not fit with all he knew of the man who efficiently ran the household. Joseph's choices spoke loudly of his character.
Our decision making also speaks of our own character development. Will our testimony show others the faithfulness of our God or our own lack of character strength? Even if we fail, when we cling to God, as Joseph did, the end of our story will be strong.
